The virtual installation UNVEILED PRESENCE (secret sounds 1v) uses sounds recorded inside of selected water towers in the DUMBO area around the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn, New York. It marks a first step of installation work, which deals with the unique character of this place. The acoustic recordings were installed in the virtual water towers in the online world of “Second Life”. The recordings were made with hydrophone equipment placed in the water in the real tanks. The four towers were selected for their rich and dense field of sound in a quadrangular pattern around the Manhattan Bridge.
The recordings were made simultaneously at all four places, thus creating a quadrophonic sound field of outside soundscapes with resonations from within the tanks. The result is an amalgamation of various sounds such as valves, water and sounds from inside the building. The public installation in “Second life” enables the viewer to virtually move and fly through the original sound field of the real place.
